Chess club Night Move To Thursdays.

Cadillac Chess Club will be meeting on Thursday for the next month: 17 Feb. 2011 to 10 Mar. 2011. While Terry is gone on vacation to give Will Green time to come to the club again b/c for his job. After that we will be back on Wednesdays, starting on the 16Mar. 2011. Thanks evevyone.

Michigan Open 2011 will be held in Cadillac!!!!!!!!!

That's right the Michigan Open 2011 will be held in Cadillac, Michigan. I have never played because it is always held on Labor Day weekend, but not this time. The tournament will only be 15 miles from my house, so I am going. I hope to see U all at the tournament.

Also, now that thing are some what back to normal, what ever that is, I should be making monthly updates about the club. I just hope some of you are still out there.

Sorry to everyone who reads my blog. The final parts of the history are coming. The club has had membership boom lately, more and more player keep coming out. Future plans for the blog are a monthly update of club actives: latter rating changes and games for latter play @ the club. Plz anyone who reads this blog, any thoughts on what you would like to see here leave a comment. Thanks everyone for your patience and I hope U R still here.

History of the Cadillac Chess Club Part 2: Expansion

Well the club was starting to get 4-6 players every week and that was crowded for Paul's house. I do not know who, it might have been Ray Mayer, a regular player today or Ron Jacobs or both, that got the a room at the Cadillac High School. This is where the club meet for next 10 years give or take. I, Rick Spangler found the club in 1993 and who did I play first Paul. He beat me up badly and I have been coming ever since. I came to find out Paul was a TD, so started to talk to he about doing tournaments at the club. This is how the Cadillac Open began and where I will pick up next time.

The year is 1985, it all starts at Paul Townsend house with co founder Duane Croel. The club meet on Friday night and stayed at Paul's house until 1990. Paul's Aunt live at the house at the time. There were and avg. of 4 player off and on at the time Paul said. Then in 1990 there started to have 4-6 players every every week, so it was time to expand. That is were the next part will pick up at, in two weeks the club expansion.

The future is history????

Hi everyone. Sorry for last weeks hiatus, I was at my yearly ice fishing trip. I am preparing a 3 or 4 part series on the history of the Cadillac Chess Club. I will be interviewing the founding fathers of the club and take you through the Cadillac Open days to the present. I hope to have part one next week. I will see you then.

Supper Bowl XLIV will start in about an hour, so it is time for my weekly updated. I just found today a new interface for playing on FICS, it is call iNemesis Version 5.0 Online Chess. Based on CClient 2.0 and written by TinPin @ FICS. This interface has a great look and feel, I have just started working with it, so let everyone know how it works for you. A FREE electronic chess book for beginners. Written by an International Master, the book contains lots of animated graphics and easy to follow explanations. The book is fun to read, but what makes this an out of the ordinary book (apart from being FREE!) is that you also get free on-line support for it!

Ok, but what type of on-line support?

Have you heard about the chessboard paradox?

If you have, well then there's really no point reading on, but if you haven't, it is a very confusing mathematical paradox involving the chessboard.

Here's what I'm going to do: I will cut up the chessboard with three straight cuts (left). Now, I'll rearrange the pieces into a rectangle (right).

The area on the left is 8x8=64. But the area on the right is 5x13=65. What is going on?!

The trick is connected to mathematics involving the Fibonacci sequence and its related Cassini's identity. Oh, and there is a mistake somewhere, because 64 obviously does not equal 65.

Arena 2.0.1 is a great program for playing, working with databases, and studying chess. Arena comes with Rybka v2.2n2 which is rated at 2990 and many other engines as well, that could beat any GM in the world. Everybody who plays chess should check Arena out. Let me know what you think.
